This Apple is Music
Dan Wingfield is a wonderful friend. He was my best buddy during my time in Los Angeles. He really got me through. However, as I was then - after being cordial for the first few weeks and thankful that I had someone to talk and turn to, my musical beliefs got in the way and turned me into a raging lunatic.

As we were walking west on Hollywood Boulevard with a bellyful of pizza, I was trying to explain to him some of the ideas in 20th Century Music. Of course, the minimalsism, serialsim, tonal and atonal movements were all taken care of, even some of the lesser-known movements like: danger music (one of my favorites).

"What are you talking about, Chris?!? Something isn't music just because you say it is! C'mon!"

Boy, did I lose it! I think I actually got mad.
Here we are walking down Hollywood Boulevard and I'm screaming at him:

"MUSIC IS ORGANIZED SOUND OVER LINEAR TIME! EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT! I HAVE A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF TIME AND I CAN DO WITH IT AS I PLEASE. THERE IS A START AND STOP- I can do whatever I like in between. I am the composer. I give life to the music. I am the creator; and I can give my creation any form I like. See here. See, let's say I have an apple in my hand. This apple is my compostion and it's every bit a piece of music as the stuff Prince does (Dan loves Prince)."

Dan wasn't buying it.
So, like most people, I just kept saying the same stuff - only louder and to the amusement of many vacationers getting a taste of Hollywood and seeing some of the real sights. Many of these people will probably never return to sunny California. I should probably write a formal apology to the L.A. Chamber of Commerce. Nonetheless...

Dan accepted me back as a friend a day or so later. A gesture I am still very thankful for.

The End.

but remember: My Apple is still my composition.

seen below - my composition: "San Francisco Dog Pile" (one of my faves!) ooh yeah!
